Permission For an Airbag Switch

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will give police and emergency vehicle fleets permission to install airbag switches to deactivate the passenger airbag if equipment, such as laptops or Mobile Data Terminals, will be mounted in the Airbag Zone.

To get permission you need to write a request letter that includes the VIN Number for each vehicle.

Address the letter to:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
Attention: Airbag Switch Installation
400 Seventh Street, SW
Washington, DC    20590-5000

Fax the letter to 202-493-2833.

It usually takes a few weeks to receive the approval.

If there are any questions contact Denise McNair at 202-366-8895.
