 Airbag Switches

Airbag control (on/off) switches for use on Law Enforcement and Public Safety Vehicles.

Purpose of an airbag switch:

a.       To protect equipment from damage in an airbag deployment, i.e. laptop computers, radar units and video recording – viewing equipment. This can greatly reduce repair costs by eliminating unnecessary passenger side airbag deployments to a normally empty seat.

b.      To address safety concerns for officers and passengers in the path of equipment that becomes dislodged during an airbag deployment.

Note that the specification is generic and does not include any items that preclude another manufacturer from bidding.

Airbag On/Off Switch Specification

  1. All Airbag Switches shall meet or exceed all current requirements of the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) including Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 section XI s595.5

  2. Each Airbag Switch must be able to simultaneously control both airbag detonators in a “multi-stage” airbag, as used in Ford, Chrysler or General Motors vehicles, including Crown Victoria or Impala models.

  3. Each Airbag Switch shall be controlled by a removable key, separate from the ignition key. Once turned to the OFF or ON position, the Airbag Switch will remain in that position until the key is used again to change its position.

  4. All switches for a department will be keyed the same.

  5. The switch shall include one yellow light to indicate when the airbag is turned off. The switch shall also not effect the normal operation of the airbag warning light on the instrument panel.

  6. If the Airbag Switch includes an internal fuse to protect the manufacturer from liability, the manufacturer shall warrant that it will furnish a replacement switch within two days of notification should there be a failure of the switch. This warranty shall continue for a period of not less than ten (10) years.

  7. The Airbag Switch shall include gold internal switch contacts to eliminate switch failure due to internal corrosion.

  8. The Airbag Switch shall be free of defects in material or workmanship.

  9. The Airbag Switches shall be provided with a full replacement warranty for not less than 5 years.
